José Oliveira has a degree in Electrical Engineering (Instituto Superior Técnico) and completed a Master Degree in Contemporary Art History (Thesis: The Photography and the Photographic in Ernesto de Sousa) with a scholarship from Centro Português de Fotografia (Ministry of Education). Currently he is a FCT Research Fellow (2012-2016) for a PhD on Contemporary Art History (Thesis: Art and Technology in the Second Half of the XX Century: The Code as Paradigm) and a lecturer in Photography and Visual Culture. Co-curated several exhibitions, he also colaborates with Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian with texts for exhibitions and catalogues. Is the author of several articles and scientific papers presented on national and international conferences (The 5th International Conference on the Histories of Media Art, Science and Technology, 2013).
