MANUEL VILLAVERDE CABRAL
Manuel Villaverde Cabral, Born in 1940, M. V. Cabral was a political exile in France from 1963 until the 1974 democratic revolution. He is currently Emeritus Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences and the former director of the Lisbon University Institute of Ageing (2010-2016). He was the director of the Portuguese National Library (1985-1990) and twice a vice-rector of the Lisbon University (1998-2002 and 2009-2010) as well as President of the ICS for about 12 years. Licencié-ès-Lettres and Docteur en Histoire (Paris), he was a Research Fellow at St. Antony’s College, Oxford (1976-79), and held the chair of Portuguese History at King’s College, London (1992-95). He was also a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Fall 1986), at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris, 1991), and at the former IUPERJ (Rio de Janeiro, 2003). He has published extensively on contemporary Portuguese history and society, and is a regular contributor to the mainstream media. He keeps publishing in international books and journals, and his latest book is Dimensões da Cidadania: Mobilização Política em Portugal (Afrontamento, Porto, 2015).
